Heart of Darkness: Chez Gargantua is a complex work that gives the viewer multiple readings on Kurelek’s message. This powerful work portrays drunkenness and violence in the foreground while in a backdrop men, women and children are innocently going about their everyday lives; it also seems to depict the anarchy and horror beneath the surface of a supposedly civilized society. The painting‘s title suggests references to both Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Francois Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel. A biting fantasy on the grandest of scales, Rabelais' 1534 examination of the life of his times - from bizarre battles to great drinking bouts, from satire on religion and education to matter-of-fact descriptions of bodily functions and desires - is one of the great comic masterpieces of literature. Conrad wrote in his classic novel Heart of Darkness: “We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.” One wonders what lies below the surface or behind these walls.
