Allan Wargon, director, Lismer, documentary film, National Film Board of Canada, 1951, reproduced

The year 1913 was an important turning point for Arthur Lismer. Having emigrated from England two years earlier, he was now settled in Toronto and working for Grip Ltd. with fellow artists J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael and Tom Thomson. Although he was working as a commercial artist his real passion was landscape painting, and he was particularly fascinated by the expansive and tumultuous skies of his newly adopted country.
He admired the work of John Constable, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny as well as the Impressionists but, like his fellow Canadian artists, he was searching for a new way to paint the particular landscape of Canada. In the summer of 1913 he went on his first painting trip to Georgian Bay.
This work is one of the earliest Canadian oils by Lismer. The main theme of the painting, the broad blue-grey sky, is treated with a boldness and drama that demonstrates Lismer’s new confidence in his ability and his passion for his country. With its low horizon and dramatic rain showers, it strongly resembles Georgian Bay, 1913, in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
