Emily Carr began using oil on paper in the early thirties because she felt that she needed a sketching medium that was more forceful than the watercolour that she had used earlier. Although she remained committed to the idea of sketching out of doors, like her friends in the Group of Seven she generally felt that outdoor sketches were the raw material for canvases produced in the studio. The success of her oil on paper works is that she was able to break free of the idea of these works being merely sketches and think of them as works in their own right.

The oil on paper medium allowed Carr the immediacy of watercolour but also allowed a greater strength of colour and a variety of paint treatments. When the paint was thinned with gasoline it could be applied in broad sweeping strokes that recall the washy expression of watercolour but with the rich colour of oil. Forest Interior uses paint in a wide variety of ways from the washes of the lighter browns to the more solid application of the grey, blues, and greens of the foliage.

Carr singles out a dominant tree in the foreground contrasted by movement and light in the background forest. Carr’s expressive brush-stroke conveys the wave-like movement of tree trunks and foliage animated by subtle variations of colour. The composition is equally stunning in that we have the sense that the entire forest extends forever beyond the picture plane. We feel engulfed in this forest swirl that is animated by energy. The entire composition captures Carr’s mystical identification with nature.
