This painting is an outstanding example of Jean-Paul Riopelle’s dynamic, mosaic-like compositions of the mid-1950s. A dense, controlled medley of colour and paint, Il était une fois un village demonstrates Riopelle’s great ability to create surfaces that seem to stir with contained, expressive energy. The cadence of the colour juxtapositions results from the application of paint slivers that meld together and separate in equal harmony.

Riopelle is one of Canada’s most celebrated and internationally recognized artists. A signatory of the Refus Global in 1948, his work was inspired by revolutionary ideas beginning with his Automatist explorations in the late 1940s. Il était une fois un village was produced at a pivotal time in his career, approximately six years after the artist abandoned the use of brushes in favour of the palette knife, and it demonstrates his increasing facility with this technique of paint application, and his remarkable skill in the manipulation of his materials. Indeed, it is precisely this sensuous materiality, a tantalizing tactile quality, that renders Riopelle’s works so visually compelling and sought-after.

This painting will be included as an addendum to Volume II in Volume III of Yseult Riopelle's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist's work.
