Ores (1980) exemplifies Larry Poons’s signature “Throw” paintings, where cascading, richly textured colour dominates the canvas. Born in 1937 in Tokyo and raised in New York, Poons studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and first gained recognition in the 1960s for his precise “dot” paintings. By the 1970s, he had moved beyond meticulous abstraction to embrace poured and thrown paint, exploring colour, texture, and the unpredictability of chance.

In Ores, streams of intense hues collide and interweave across the canvas, self-contained yet dynamically interacting. Poons threw paint from buckets onto canvases wrapped around studio walls, layering and refining each composition with the rigor of traditional brushwork. For Poons, colour is inseparable from light—Ores captures this principle with luminous, kinetic energy. His work has been celebrated internationally, with exhibitions in New York, Paris, and Tokyo, and is included in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim.
