In 1911, Harris met J.E.H. MacDonald, and in the fall of 1913, the soon-to-be fellow Group of Seven artists traveled to the Laurentians. During this trip, Harris created a series of small panels, including Laurentians, authenticated by the verso inscription from MacDonald’s son. Whereas some of his early Laurentian works relied on a restrained palette of subdued earth tones, here vivid oranges and reds pulse through the scene, revealing Harris’s emerging colourist capabilities and animating the landscape with warmth and energy.
