Georgian Bay, only a hundred miles from the gentler landscapes of southern Ontario, was a revelation for Arthur Lismer, who found it glorious and called it “a paradise for painters.” This striking double-sided work captures the iconic physical characteristics of the Georgian Bay landscape: pools and windswept trees springing from rocky formations. While the verso is a rough sketch, the primary side presents a lush and powerful image. A brooding, active sky with swirling clouds and a glowing horizon rises behind the green pines. In the foreground, yellow and red vegetation is rendered with gestural immediacy, punctuating the scene and adding further vitality. The composition is quintessential Lismer - a vivid and dynamic portrayal of Georgian Bay, revealing his mastery of colour, form, and the dramatic interplay of light and landscape.
