The woman depicted here is Clara Peel, sister of the artist Paul Peel. She married Reuben Booth Belden in January 1889 and was the great-great-grandmother of the present owner of the portrait, Vancouver-based artist Arnold Shives. Paul Peel returned to Canada in 1890 to visit his dying mother and stayed with the Beldens during this visit
The work’s Japonisme theme relates to Peel’s painting Japanese Dolls and Fan of circa 1889, which is held in the National Gallery of Canada. In the late nineteenth century, as Japan opened its doors to the outside world, Japanese culture and imagery began seeping into France and was absorbed by the artists of the period for its novel use of perspective, line and colour. Peel would have been no doubt influenced by his exposure to Japanese imagery during his time in Paris and in certain instances applied this influence to his own work, as seen in the present example.
This collection of works by Paul Peel is a rare offering to the Canadian market, as the works have been held in the family of the artist for over a century.
