This Quebec riverscape by the renowned Canadian Impressionist Robert Pilot brims with charming narrative details that attract the eye, from the two small figures (one perhaps at work on his roof) to the smoke rising from a tall chimney to the colourful line of laundry. La Malbaie is situated on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in Charlevoix, the kind of locale that Pilot found aesthetically appealing.

Pilot, born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, at age 12 became stepson of the influential Impressionist Maurice Cullen, who strongly influenced his artistic career. Following a move to Montreal, Pilot studied under William Brymner and, after time serving in the First World War, pursued further studies at the Académie Julian, in Paris. While in France, he absorbed the Impressionist style of painting, which he would later make his own in atmospheric landscapes such as Malbaie River.

Here, the diagonal river and road draw our eye into the distance, to the pale blue peaks of the Laurentians, flanked by lingering snow. On the river, soft-edged snowbanks and floating chunks of ice suggest a turn towards spring, as do the deciduous trees on the hillside—the same dreamy aubergine as seen in another Pilot canvas, Twilight, La Malbaie, sold by Heffel in May 2006.
